When you walk around the city, you see a lot of musk-scented products in many shops.
Musk has become one of the most popular scents that draws people in and seduces their senses.
The third article discusses the most popular scent “MUSK” with the questions like “was musk originally a medicine?”, “what is natural musk and synthetic musk?”, and “what is Cyclopentadecanolide?”
Musk is a medicine, prevention cardiac, cholera!?
Nowadays, musk is mainly used as an ingredient in perfumes and colognes.
However, musk is primarily from an incense bag of a male musk deer which was used as a medicine that came from animals.
Musk is thought to have been used since prehistoric times, and it was recognized as a valuable traditional Chinese medicine.
It was also believed to prevent cholera, types of neuroses, and asthma. Unsurprisingly, it was used as an aphrodisiac.
I’m not a professional on the matter, but it seems safe to say that musk has had a certain power through the ages.
The role of musk as a fragrance
The true scent of animal musk is unpleasant. It is described as a feral type of ammonia.
However, adding a small and concentrated amount will give the scent a sensual aroma which gives other scents more depth and a persistent headiness.
Certain nuances of musk contained pheromones that were used to attract female musk deer during mating season.
Given this fact, it is not a stretch to say musk is naturally imbued with a certain lustful and sexual energy.
Original musk derived from deer is no longer sold in legal markets.
In the past, musk deer were slaughtered for their musk, an act brought to a halt and prohibited by a Washington convention.
Emergence of synthetic musk to protect musk deer
Instead of using natural musk, which is regulated under Washington Convention, industry leaders in technology began synthesizing artificial forms of musk.
Nowadays, synthetic musk has made remarkable gains in the market, boasting more than 2% of the entire synthetic fragrance market, and up to 7% by the wholesale transaction amount.
As a side note, “white musk” as you may have heard, is a general term for synthetic musk to distinguish it from natural musk.
Synthetic musk is not only popular in perfumes and colognes, but also for room fragrances, detergents, soaps, and bubble baths, among others.
When you factor in the number of products that use just a hint of musk to punctuate and complement its main scent, one realizes that musk is in all of our lives to a certain degree.
The Magical Power of Cyclopentadecanolide
It is said that musk especially attracts women.
French scientist, Jacques Le Magnene, did research that proves just that.
According to him, mature women have a stronger ability to sense a substance called “Cyclopentadecanolide” (known as “muscone”).
On the other hand, his research showed that men and girls were essentially unable to sense it at all.
Moreover, Le Magnene’s research showed that increased estrogen was positively correlated with an ability to sense muscone.
As a side note, synthetic musk and the original have become remarkably similar due to advances in chemistry.
Nowadays, the elements in synthetic musk are almost the same as natural musk.
Blaise Pascal once said that the whole face of the world would have changed if Cleopatra’s nose had been shorter.
We might also muse that it may have also been different if she hadn’t doused herself in musk.
It is rumored that she used it to attract the Roman, Marc Antony.
Did she also use it as a love potion or an aphrodisiac, or simply to excite herself?
Or was it used in a quest to stay young or a bid for immortality
Such questions we could ponder eternally…
