{"id":2299,"date":"2021-10-18T17:15:33","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T08:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artlab.co.jp\/en\/?post_type=blog&#038;p=2250"},"modified":"2021-10-18T17:28:10","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T08:28:10","slug":"fragrant_etc_02","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"http:\/\/test.artlab.co.jp\/en\/blog\/etc\/fragrant_etc_02","title":{"rendered":"No.2\uff5cNatural and Synthetic Fragrances: Differences and Safety Concerns\uff5cFRAGRANCE LAB.BLOG"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"set\">\r\n\t<div class=\"text_img\">\r\n\t<div class=\"text_area\">\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p>Even if you\u2019re not very familiar with fragrances, you\u2019ve probably come across the terms \u201cNatural Fragrance\u201d and \u201cSynthetic Fragrances\u201d once or twice.<\/p>\r\n\t\t<p>It is very common to suppose that, because one is natural and the other is synthetic, the former is harmless while the latter is dangerous.<\/p>\r\n\t\t<p>However, this is an understandable misconception on behalf of the layperson, and doesn\u2019t reflect reality.<\/p>\r\n\t\t<p>The proceeding article will deal with the differences and safety issues surrounding natural and synthetic fragrances.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"img_area\">\r\n\t\t\t<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/etc2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2259\" \/><\/figure>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n      <\/div><!-- text_img -->\r\n<\/div><!-- set -->\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"set\">\r\n\t<h2>Misconceptions about Safety<\/h2>\r\n\t<div class=\"img_text\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"text_area\">\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<p>Natural fragrances come from plants or seedlings which are grown wild or naturally and harvested.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t<p>Plants without any chemical fertilizer or pesticides are classified as organic.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t<p>On the other hand, synthetic fragrances are made artificially and include fragrances that do not occur naturally in Mother Nature.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<p>It should be noted that synthetic fragrances are not the opposite of natural fragrances; that title belongs to fragrances falling under the umbrella term \u201csimple substance fragrances\u201d.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t<p>To add another layer of complexity, these simple substance fragrances are classified further into synthetic fragrances and isolated fragrances (wherein only specific substances are extracted from natural plants).<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<p>When combined, these fragrances are called \u201cformulated fragrances\u201d.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t<p>When perfumers and makers of fragrance begin their process, they use myriad fragrances of all classes that are selected for a specific purpose or niche in the market.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"img_area\">\r\n\t\t\t<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/etc2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"626\" height=\"939\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2260\" \/><\/figure>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n      <\/div><!-- text_img -->\r\n<\/div><!-- set -->\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"set\">\r\n\t<h2>Is it accurate to say that natural fragrances are safe while synthetic ones are harmful?<\/h2>\r\n\t<div class=\"text_img\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"text_area\">\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<p>To begin, we should dispel the widely held notion that natural and artificial elements are at opposite ends of the safety spectrum.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t<p>Most companies will sell a fragrance by touting it as \u201cnatural\u201d, which becomes a connotation for \u201csafe\u201d.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t<p>This is a well-established marketing strategy. However, this doesn\u2019t imply that natural fragrances are unsafe.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t<p>We ourselves sell many diffusers and air fresheners that use natural fragrances.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t<p>The issue to be tackled is the belief that everything called \u201cnatural\u201d is harmless.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"img_area\">\r\n\t\t\t<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artlab.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/etc2-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"626\" height=\"447\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2261\" \/><\/figure>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n      <\/div><!-- text_img -->\r\n\t\r\n\t<p>Aromatherapy has many effects that may be of benefit provided we research the relevant information and seek professional guidance on using it to its optimal potential.<\/p>\r\n\t\r\n<\/div><!-- set -->\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"set\">\r\n\t<h2>Some natural fragrances may carry risk<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\t<p>Lavender oil, often utilized for its relaxation effect, may be dangerous if used improperly.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>For example, during the early stages of pregnancy, an expectant mother should not apply it to her skin.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Lavender, along with some other essential oils, may cause unwanted hormonal changes that, in rare cases, may lead to miscarriage or premature delivery.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t<p>Another confounding fact is that information about the substance\u2019s origin is often hard to find.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Things like soil contamination might result in impurities in the essential oil, which is a challenge faced in the aroma industry today.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t<p>One of the characteristics of natural fragrances is that their molecular components are naturally unstable.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>In my opinion, the important thing is to clearly state what type of chemical compositions are in the substance, rather than how they are extracted.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>On the other hand, synthetic fragrances are made using modern techniques that ensure an overwhelmingly pure product.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t<p>The undiluted solution of the fragrances we use in our products are proven and verified to pass all safety tests according to international industry standards.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t<p>The fragrances that have passed these tests are accompanied by an ingredient list detailing all the substances and their percentages.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>It is a very important document required for imports and exports.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t<p>In the wake of globalization, the fragrance market has proliferated, and there is now a regulatory body called the IFRA (International Fragrance Association) which applies standards on all fragrances.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Science in these matters has allowed us great leaps in terms of safety, but we have yet to iron out all the kinks.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Therefore, it is best to be a wise and informed consumer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t<p>Everything can be toxic if a large enough dose is taken.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Paracelsus, a Swiss alchemist and doctor from the Middle Ages, imparted his wisdom:<\/p>]\r\n\t<p>\u201cAlle Dinge sind Gift und nichts ist ohne Gift; allein die Dosis macht es, dass ein Ding kein Gift ist.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\t<p>His famous quote is translated thus: \u201cAll things are poison, and nothing is without poison, the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\t<p>To paraphrase, nothing in excess is of benefit, and anything overdone will bring harm.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>This is observed in the line we walk with salt: it is essential for survival, but ingest too much, and one may die.<\/p>\r\n\t\r\n\t<p>According to studies, salt in excess of 3.5g per kilogram of body weight results in deleterious effects on the body.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>As we can see, it is often not the natural or synthetic properties that we should be concerned about, but the dose of the substance.<\/p>\r\n\t\r\n\t<p>However, room fragrances are aerosolized and float in the air.
